Even with the continuous advancements in Medical Science, though we are able to provide a substitute for breast milk to a new born baby whenever necessary, we are still however unable to provide a suitable replacement for Human Blood. Hence, the Blood Bank in Mar Sleeva Medicity Palai stands as an authorized unit licensed by The Drugs Controller General, Government of India for Donor Blood Collection, Blood Donor Screening and Blood unit processing so as to be in ready service when needed.
The Blood Bank follows Nationalized Standard Protocols for the selection of a blood donor and utilizes the services of a trained Blood Donor Counselor in assessing high risk activities of blood donors to prevent Transfusion related Diseases. The Donor Selection process includes a thorough medical examination and physical check-up. Blood Collection is a vital area and the precautions that we take in this area are believed to be effective for reducing contamination and thereby lower the transfusion reaction rate.
Each of the blood unit that we collect is separated into its components. A single unit whole blood can be separated and stored for the benefit of 4 human beings when needed. Whole blood can be separated into its components like Red Cell Concentrates, Platelet Concentrate, Fresh Frozen Plasma and Cryo Precipitate. Quality Indicators are closely monitored in this area to improve quality of blood components periodically. The Blood units collected are screened for HIV I & II, anti – HCV, HBsAg, Syphilis and Malarial parasite as per legal requirements. The reports of screening are maintained in our database for more than 5 years.
Blood Grouping and cross matching tests are carried out in the most modern platforms like gel cards. This provides better reporting system and standardization of testing practice. We practice strict time monitoring from the blood collection to the time of component preparation. This is one of the Quality indicators that will enhance the Quality of blood component that we prepared. We also monitor the transfusion reaction rate, cross match to issue ratio and percentage of wastage in blood components.
