Stem Cell & Bone Marrow Transplant

Stem Cell & Bone Marrow Transplant

The Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit forms a key part of our treatment approach for blood cancers and life threatening hematological conditions. It serves as a cornerstone of advanced cancer care. Designed according to international standards, the transplant program combines modern infrastructure, expert medical teams, and compassionate care in one dedicated facility.

In addition, the centre provides complete pre transplant and post transplant care. This includes strict infection control measures, supportive therapies, and structured long term follow up programs to ensure patient safety and recovery.

What is a Stem Cell / Bone Marrow Transplant?

A stem cell transplant, also called a bone marrow transplant, is an advanced medical procedure that replaces damaged or diseased blood-forming stem cells with healthy stem cells. These healthy cells help restore normal blood production and support immune system recovery.

As a result, the body can:

      • Regain its ability to produce red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
      • Rebuild and strengthen the immune system after intensive treatment.
      • Improve long term survival and overall quality of life in patients with serious or life threatening blood disorders and cancers.

Depending on the patient’s diagnosis and treatment plan, doctors may use the patient’s own stem cells, which is known as an autologous transplant. Alternatively, doctors may use healthy stem cells from a compatible donor, called an allogeneic transplant. The choice of transplant depends on the type of disease, stage of illness, and overall health condition of the patient.

      The Transplant Journey

      • Pre-transplant Evaluation : Detailed diagnostic workup, infection screening, and counseling.
      • Conditioning Therapy : High-dose chemotherapy (sometimes with radiation) to destroy diseased marrow and prepare the body for new stem cells.
      • Stem Cell Infusion : Healthy stem cells are infused intravenously, similar to a blood transfusion.
      • Engraftment & Recovery : The new cells begin producing healthy blood cells; this stage requires close monitoring in a protective environment.
      • Post-transplant Care : Long-term follow-up for infection prevention, graft monitoring, relapse surveillance, and rehabilitation.

      Long-Term Follow-Up

Recovery after transplant continues well beyond hospital discharge. Our team ensures:

      • Regular monitoring of blood counts and organ function
      • Early detection of complications such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)
      • Vaccination schedules for immune reconstitution
      • Ongoing nutritional and psychological support for both patients and families

      Frequently asked Questions

Geriatricians have dedicated advanced training in the aging process. They excel at managing how multiple health issues interact with one another and focus heavily on preserving mobility, cognitive function, and quality of life rather than just treating isolated symptoms.

Our geriatric team manages a wide range of age related health concerns. This includes memory disorders such as dementia, mobility and balance issues, chronic joint pain, osteoporosis, fall prevention, and the comprehensive management of complex overlapping diseases.

While there is no strict age requirement, adults aged 65 and older generally benefit the most from this specialized care. It is especially recommended for seniors who are managing multiple chronic conditions, experiencing memory issues, or taking several daily medications.
