23 January 2026Strengthening Comprehensive Cancer Care in Central Kerala
Mar Sleeva Cancer Care and Research Centre has commenced operations of its Advanced Radiation Oncology Therapy Unit. This development strengthens the Centre’s ability to deliver comprehensive and multidisciplinary cancer care in Central Kerala. Moreover, the new unit marks an important step toward building a fully integrated oncology ecosystem. It also brings advanced radiation treatment closer to patients in the region.
Inauguration of the Radiation Oncology Therapy Unit
His Excellency Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, Bishop of the Pala Diocese, blessed and formally inaugurated the Radiation Oncology Therapy Unit. The ceremony took place in the presence of the chief guests, Mr. Varghese Maliekel and Mrs. Sheila Maliekel. Through this inauguration, the Centre expanded access to modern radiation therapy services for patients across Central Kerala.
Precision Focused Radiation Treatment
The Radiation Oncology Department uses advanced radiation delivery technology to achieve high precision tumour targeting. At the same time, the system minimises exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. As a result, the department aims to reduce treatment related side effects. The clinical team also focuses on delivering accurate and consistent radiation therapy to improve patient outcomes.
Advanced Technology and Multidisciplinary Expertise
The department operates with the Elekta Versa HD® linear accelerator, which supports high definition dynamic radiosurgery. A coordinated multidisciplinary team delivers radiation therapy services. This team includes radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, and oncology nursing professionals. In addition, all treatments follow structured and evidence based clinical protocols to ensure safety and quality.
Comprehensive Oncology Infrastructure
The Oncology Department functions across two centrally air conditioned floors.
It includes a 35 bed chemotherapy care unit, dedicated VIP therapy suites, and paediatric day care facilities. Furthermore, the Centre has established a comprehensive Paediatric Oncology Department. This department addresses the growing regional need for specialised childhood cancer care.
Advanced Diagnostics and Transplant Support
The Nuclear Medicine Department provides advanced diagnostic and disease staging services. These include PET imaging and gamma camera SPECT systems. In addition, infrastructure for stem cell and bone marrow transplantation is nearing readiness. Facilities for apheresis and cryopreservation are also in advanced stages of development.
Integrated Oncology Services Under One Roof
Mar Sleeva Cancer Care and Research Centre delivers integrated oncology services across Medical Oncology, Hemato Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Paediatric Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplantation, CAR T cell Therapy, Palliative Oncology, Onco Nutrition, Psycho Oncology, Rehabilitative Oncology, cancer research programmes, and fourteen multidisciplinary cancer clinics.
