Neonatology

The Department of Neonatology at Mar Sleeva Medicity, Palai operates Central Kerala's most advanced Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Our 11-bed unit provides round-the-clock care for premature babies, low birth weight infants, and critically ill newborns from birth up to 4 weeks of age, including extremely premature infants from 24 weeks of gestation and babies weighing as low as 400 grams. Our NICU accepts both in-born and out-born babies, serving families across Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha. With approximately 1,200 admissions every year, we are a recognized neonatal referral centre across Kerala with outcomes comparable to national and global benchmarks.

Our dedicated multidisciplinary team delivers advanced respiratory, cardiac, metabolic, surgical, and neurological support following globally accepted protocols. We manage severe respiratory distress, congenital heart defects, metabolic and genetic disorders, and neonatal infections and sepsis. Our unit is equipped with mechanical ventilation, High Frequency Ventilation, bedside echocardiography, advanced neuroimaging including MRI, PICC line insertion, Total Parenteral Nutrition, phototherapy, and exchange transfusion. Comprehensive neonatal services including Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, genetic screening and counselling, complete ROP care including laser therapy, lactation counselling, antenatal counselling for high-risk pregnancies, and family education sessions are provided throughout the NICU stay. Our dedicated Neonatal Retrieval and Transport Team ensures safe stabilization and transfer of critically ill newborns in Kottayam district and Central Kerala.
