The Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit is a cornerstone of our treatment approach for various blood cancers and life-threatening hematological conditions. Our centre ensures comprehensive pre- and post-transplant care, with robust infection control, supportive therapies, and long-term follow-up.

What is a Stem Cell / Bone Marrow Transplant?

A stem cell transplant (commonly known as a bone marrow transplant) is a procedure in which damaged or diseased blood-forming stem cells are replaced with healthy ones. These new cells enable the body to:

      • Regain its natural ability to produce red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
      • Rebuild and strengthen the immune system
      • Improve long-term survival and quality of life in patients with otherwise life-threatening conditions

Transplants can be performed using the patient’s own cells (autologous transplant) or donor cells (allogeneic transplant), depending on the medical condition and treatment plan.

      The Transplant Journey

      • Pre-transplant Evaluation : Detailed diagnostic workup, infection screening, and counseling.
      • Conditioning Therapy : High-dose chemotherapy (sometimes with radiation) to destroy diseased marrow and prepare the body for new stem cells.
      • Stem Cell Infusion : Healthy stem cells are infused intravenously, similar to a blood transfusion.
      • Engraftment & Recovery : The new cells begin producing healthy blood cells; this stage requires close monitoring in a protective environment.
      • Post-transplant Care : Long-term follow-up for infection prevention, graft monitoring, relapse surveillance, and rehabilitation.

      Long-Term Follow-Up

Recovery after transplant continues well beyond hospital discharge. Our team ensures:

      • Regular monitoring of blood counts and organ function
      • Early detection of complications such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)
      • Vaccination schedules for immune reconstitution
      • Ongoing nutritional and psychological support for both patients and families
