Mar Sleeva Medicity Palai has inaugurated the second floor of Annex 1, a 30,000 sqft centre dedicated to Gastro Sciences and Pulmonary Medicine. The new facility brings advanced digestive and respiratory care under one roof, with dedicated suites for procedures such as ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, manometry, bronchoscopy and EBUS, alongside a FibroScan, a sleep study centre and an allergy clinic. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Mar Joseph Pallikaparampil and blessed by His Excellency Mar Joseph Kallarangatt.

The new Annex 1 centre houses Medical Gastroenterology, Surgical Gastroenterology and Pulmonary Medicine in one 30,000 sqft floor, so that diagnosis, advanced endoscopic and bronchoscopic procedures, and follow up care for digestive and respiratory conditions can all take place in the same location.

A dedicated centre for two specialties

The second floor of Annex 1 at Mar Sleeva Medicity Palai is a 30,000 sqft centre built exclusively for Gastro Sciences and Pulmonary Medicine. Rather than spreading digestive and respiratory services across the hospital, the floor gathers the consultation, diagnostic and procedure areas for both specialties in one place, designed for faster diagnosis, precise treatment and patient comfort.

In the coming days, the Departments of Medical Gastroenterology, Surgical Gastroenterology and Pulmonary Medicine will move to this facility, bringing comprehensive digestive and respiratory care together under one roof.

Inauguration and blessing

The centre was inaugurated by His Excellency Mar Joseph Pallikaparampil and blessed by His Excellency Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, Bishop of the Eparchy of Palai, marking the opening of the new Annex 1 facility.

Gastro Sciences procedures

On the gastroenterology side, the centre is equipped for advanced endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of digestive, biliary and pancreatic conditions.

  • ERCP Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, used to diagnose and treat problems in the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts, such as stones and blockages.
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) Combines endoscopy with ultrasound to assess the digestive tract wall and nearby organs, and to guide sampling of lesions.
  • Manometry Measures the pressure and coordination of the muscles of the digestive tract, used to investigate swallowing and motility disorders.

Pulmonary Medicine procedures

On the respiratory side, the centre supports advanced airway diagnosis and the evaluation of lung and chest conditions.

  • Bronchoscopy A thin, flexible scope passed into the airways to examine the windpipe and lungs and to take samples when needed.
  • EBUS Endobronchial Ultrasound, a bronchoscopy with an ultrasound probe used to examine the lungs and the lymph nodes in the chest, and to guide needle sampling for diagnosis and staging of lung conditions.

FibroScan, sleep study and allergy clinic

Alongside the endoscopy and bronchoscopy suites, the centre includes further diagnostic services for liver, sleep and allergy conditions.

  • FibroScan A non invasive scan that assesses liver fibrosis (scarring) and steatosis (fat) without a biopsy, supporting the evaluation of liver disease.
  • Sleep study centre A dedicated facility to assess sleep related breathing disorders such as sleep apnoea.
  • Allergy clinic A clinic for the assessment and management of allergic and respiratory allergy conditions.

What this means for patients

Bringing Medical Gastroenterology, Surgical Gastroenterology and Pulmonary Medicine together on one floor means a patient's consultation, diagnostic tests and procedures can happen in the same place, reducing movement between departments and supporting faster, more coordinated care for digestive and respiratory conditions.

The procedures and services described here are carried out as part of clinical assessment by the treating team. Whether a particular test or procedure is needed is decided case by case.
